Everybody wants to be a cat… Well, if you believe The Aristocats, that is. And there are some fantastic feline familiars that might well agree with them. After all, they’re one of the most popular familiars for those of a witchy persuasion
Salem
A teenage witch needs a sarcastic and opinionated cat, right? Of course, he’s not actually a cat – he was a 500-year-old witch who tried to take over the world. The Witches Council sentenced him to spend 100 years as a cat to punish him. He’s still bent on world domination, but he does have a bit of a softer side that peeks through.
Mister Bigglesworth
We always have a soft spot for a hairless Sphynx, and Doctor Evil’s creepy companion is no exception. Not to mention, when he gets upset, people die. And let’s not forget Mini-Mister Bigglesworth, the cat owned by Mini-Me!
Thackery Binx
Hocus Pocus is an absolute classic. Our favourite character is obviously Binx, transformed from teenage boy into immortal black cat by the Sanderson Sisters after he insulted them. Unable to save his sister from the witches, he guarded their house every Hallowe’en to try and prevent them from coming back. He’s sweet and caring but sad and cautious at the same time.
Mrs Norris
If any film cat could be properly called a familiar, it’s Filch’s cat in the Harry Potter series. She skulks around Hogwarts, alerting her human companion to student misbehaviour. Affectionate with her person Filch, she’s hissy and hostile to almost everyone else, which we can respect!
Church
Being alive isn’t a requirement to be on the list. And when Winston Churchill, better known as Church, is buried on cursed ground in Pet Semetary, it’s hardly his fault that he comes back as an undead critter.
Jonesy
Alien isn’t just about a badass woman taking on a xenomorph… It’s also about her badass cat, who is the only other survivor. For some reason, despite coming face to face with the Alien, Jonesy is ignored and not attacked. Maybe the Alien didn’t think the cat was worth notice, but we think it knew better than to mess with the formidable feline.
Yzma
Ok, so she’s not a cat for most of the film, but when the antagonist of The Emperor’s New Groove gets turned into a cute lilac kitten at the end, it’s hard not to love her. “Is that my voice?!”
Cheshire Cat
That’s one toothy grin. And anyone who has lived with a cat or two will tell you, they really do seem to appear and disappear from thin air, even if it’s not quite as magical as when our pink and purple friend does it.
